 The NFPA Recommends getting your chimney cleaned once a year. Just a 1/8th inch of creosote can cause a chimney fire. 

 Creosote is a black, tar-like substance that builds up inside your chimney's flue.  It is highly flammable and can ignite at high temperatures, posing a serious fire hazard. In addition to its flammable properties, creosote can also release harmful gases such as carbon monoxide.  This is why it's important to have your chimney cleaned regularly by a professional chimney sweep.
